Situated in the Gulf of Tonkin, in Quang Ninh Province and about 165 km from Hanoi City Center, Halong Bay embraces a mostly-uninhabited area of 1553 km2 including 1969 islands as well as islets, living local life with some small floating villages, deserted sandy beaches, admirable wonderful caves.
Halong Bay is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1994 and 2000. Its name with well-known meaning of “Bay of the Descending Dragon” is originated from a mysterious legend in which a Mother Dragon was sent by Emperor of Jade to help Viet people fight against foreign invaders. In this process, The Dragon spat jewels that formed the karst landscape as their landing in the sea. The Mother Dragon and her children then, following their decision of settlement, descended to Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay respectively. For geological perspective, as combination of tectonic activities, weather condition of a tropical climate and the presence of thick limestone, these regressions and transgressions created karst formation at islets and caves in the bay.
This World Heritage Site is blessed with numerous tree-covered-on-top islets steeply emerging from the emerald water, dotted over the bay, which creates breath-taking panoramic scenery from the top view totally occupying the hardest traveler’ heart. Tourists could not miss their chance of enjoying magnificent secluded caves such as Surprising Cave, Thien Cung Cave or Heavenly Palace Cave, featuring stalactites and stalagmites in a variety of shapes illuminated by colorful systems. It lets visitors have a kind of feel of lost in the mysteriously magical heaven.
