Sung Sot Cave, also known as Surprise Cave, is situated on Bo Hon Island and at height of 25 meters approximately above sea level. It is its original French name “Grotte de la surprise” that leaves a great impression on visitor’s heart. Coming to Sung Sot Cave, visitors have an unforgettable experience in combination with climbing along a steep path under the shadow of trees and eagerness as if they were in the heaven. Considered as one of the most magnificent grottos in the center of the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Halong Bay, this cave catches visitors’ eyes by an amazing world of thousands of stalactites and stalagmites after about 50-step climbing. The illuminations following elegant styles enhance the charm of such a mysteriously beautiful grotto in combination with outside –world sunlight. Sung Sot Cave is divided into two chambers.

The first chamber is spare and at around 30 –meter height, normally referred as a waiting room. The ceiling is smooth with a variety of sparkling stalactites in numerous spectacular shapes of the elephants, tortoises…, which let visitors fall into their own heaven of imagination. They also have a chance to hear a legend for the rock shape of a horse with a long sword right at the side of the entrance. It is about Saint Giong (Thanh Giong), who helped country defeat invaders, leaving a stone horse and whip to fly to heaven.

After about-3-meter-wide path, tourists step into the second chamber and an “Opera House” is open in front of their eyes. At this time, they indeed understand why this grotto is called “Sung Sot”. Flowstones, stalactites and stalagmites which are gradually formed throughout millions of year provide them the magical world of imagination from different angles in the view of the cave.
